The Oldest Partnership

The Romans understood Fortuna as a goddess, not a gamble. She stood in her temples with a cornucopia in one arm and a rudder in the other — abundance and direction. What you received from her was not random. It was the yield of what you were aligned with, made visible. The Wheel of Fortune that Boethius described in the sixth century — the most-read book in medieval Europe after the Bible — was her central image: not as cruelty, but as the law. Everything rises. Everything falls. The woman who knows this does not fear the wheel. She learns to move with it.

Machiavelli tried to master her. He spent his career writing instructions for how to hold Fortune down. He never could. She is ungovernable by force. She responds only to alignment — to the person who has become precisely what they are, who has stopped asking permission to take up space, who has recognized that what is coming toward them has been coming for a long time.

And Amore: Dante placed it as the last word of the Divine Comedy. L’amor che move il sole e l’altre stelle — the love that moves the sun and all the other stars. He did not mean affection. He meant the structural force of the cosmos. Paracelsus, the alchemical physician, called it the force of attraction between elements — the thing that makes matter cohere rather than scatter. Without amore, there is no alchemy. Nothing holds. Nothing becomes.

In Botticelli’s Primavera, Venus stands at the center. To her left, the Three Graces dance. One of them is Fortune. They have always occupied the same canvas. They belong together because they always have been together — two faces of the same cosmic law: what you love, you call toward you. What calls toward you is your fortune unfolding.

These pieces are not wishes. They are alignments. Wear one when you have decided. When you have said yes to the next thing. When you are ready for what has been waiting for you to be ready.
