'Atonement'

The word doesn't mean what most people think it means. Atonement — at-one-ment. The return to wholeness. Not punishment. Not debt. Reunion.

The ancient Egyptians had a ceremony for it: the weighing of the heart. At death, your heart was placed on one side of a great scale. On the other: a single feather — the feather of Ma'at, goddess of truth and cosmic order. If your heart was lighter than the feather, you passed. If it was heavy with what you hadn't resolved, you stayed.

They weren't judging sin. They were measuring unfinished business.
