The Picts inhabited Scotland before the Romans arrived, before the Celts, before any recorded history of the north. They left no written language. What they left were carved stones — hundreds of them, scattered across the Scottish highlands — covered in intricate symbols that no one has fully decoded. Animals, geometric patterns, mirror and comb symbols, the Pictish beast. The meaning has not survived. Only the mark.
They held back the Roman Empire at Hadrian's Wall — the Romans built the wall not because they conquered the Picts but because they couldn't. The bravest hearts often leave no documentation of their courage. No biography. No record of what they thought or feared or chose. Only the evidence that they were here, and that they held what they held, and that they carved something beautiful in stone so that someone would know.
This is for the woman whose courage leaves marks even when no one is keeping score.
