The Eleusinian Mysteries — held annually outside Athens for nearly two thousand years — ended in a night of dancing. After nine days of fasting, grief rituals, and the drinking of a sacred kykeon (possibly psychoactive, historians debate), initiates descended into the underground sanctuary. What they saw there has never been revealed. Every initiate took an oath of silence and kept it. But they emerged, after dancing all night, fundamentally changed. They reported no longer fearing death.
The Sufi whirling dervishes spin not as performance but as prayer. The rotation of the body around its axis mirrors the rotation of the planets, the electron around its nucleus. To spin is to enter the cosmic pattern. The dance is the universe demonstrating its own nature through a body willing to move.
