'Edelweiss'

Edelweiss — edel, noble; weiss, white — grows above 1,800 meters in the Alps, where soil is thin, air is scarce, and UV radiation is intense. It has evolved to survive this by growing dense white hairs across its surface that filter the light. It armors itself with silver-white fuzz and blooms there, at altitude, where almost nothing else does. It is technically a composite flower — what looks like petals are actually star-shaped leaves surrounding a cluster of tiny true flowers at the center.

In Austrian and Swiss tradition, bringing edelweiss to a beloved was proof of love — because reaching it required climbing where most people couldn't. It was not the flower that mattered. It was what the flower said about the one who went to get it. It said: I will go where it is difficult, for you.
