'Feria'

The great Gothic cathedrals of Europe were not designed primarily to house prayer. They were designed to alter consciousness through light. The architects knew that colored light passing through stained glass at specific angles would create specific physiological and psychological states in the people standing inside. The deep blue of Chartres. The saturated red of Sainte-Chapelle, which turns the interior the color of the inside of a heart. Color was not decoration in these buildings. Color was liturgy.

Feria — festival, fair, celebration — arrives in color. The chromotherapy tradition holds that each wavelength of visible light carries a distinct frequency that the body receives and responds to. Medieval healers used colored silk over windows as medicine. The Theosophists mapped the aura in color. The Vedic tradition assigned a specific color to each chakra, each quality of consciousness, each state of being — a complete map of the interior life written in the spectrum.

To dress in color is not vanity. In every tradition that has thought carefully about this, it is a form of intention — a declaration of what frequency you are choosing to inhabit and broadcast.
