'Florets Of Florence'

Botticelli's Primavera was painted for the Medici in the 1470s and has been argued over ever since. The figure of Flora — mouth open, flowers spilling from her lips, scattering blooms across the canvas — is not decoration. The Medici circle were Neoplatonists; every element of the painting encodes something. Flora speaks the language of flowers literally: what pours from her is meaning, not ornament.

The Neoplatonists believed beauty was not aesthetic — it was ontological. Beauty was the visible trace of the divine, the form the transcendent took when it wanted to be seen. To make something beautiful was not art. It was theology.
