'The Garden Heart'

The word paradise comes from the Old Persian pairidaeza — a walled garden. The Persian kings built enclosed gardens of extraordinary intentionality: water, shade, fragrance, birds, fruit. When Alexander the Great encountered them, he had no word for what he was seeing. He borrowed theirs. Paradise became the word for the enclosed place of beauty and sufficiency. Every sacred tradition then placed its origin story inside one.

Eden. The Garden of the Hesperides with its golden apples and immortal guardians. The garden of Gethsemane. The Zen garden as distillation of the world to its essential forms. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, built by a king for a homesick queen who missed her mountain homeland. The garden is always where something essential was — and was lost — and might, if you tended it carefully enough, be found again.

A garden is one of the few places in the world where the individual and the community exist without contradiction. Every species follows its own nature completely, and the result is not chaos but abundance. No one competes. No one asks another to be something it isn’t. The garden is the model for what the world could be if we allowed it.
