'The Phoenix Medallion'

The Garden Phoenix project began as a decade-long study of what happens when a plant is allowed to remember itself. Celosia — the fire flower — was given space, time, and minimal interference. What emerged over ten years was not what seed catalogs had described: the plant rewilded, went strange, developed forms and colors that cultivation alone cannot produce, exceeded every expectation of what it was supposed to be. The study concluded that the cultivated version of the plant was a diminished version. Freedom was the growing condition that produced the plant’s full potential.

This was also always a study of a woman watching a plant rewild itself over ten years while watching herself do the same thing. Every garden is the gardener. What you give space to is what grows. What you allow to forget its cultivated habits is what becomes most fully itself. The cultivation that produces predictable results also produces predictable limits. The experiment that allowed the plant to become unpredictable produced something no one had planned for and everyone recognized as more itself than the planned version ever was.

The phoenix does not rise from the fire as metaphor. The fire is the growing condition.
