In 1829, a London physician named Nathaniel Ward noticed that fern spores buried in a sealed glass jar had germinated. The jar had created its own sealed microclimate — moisture cycling endlessly, nothing entering or leaving. He built cases from this discovery. The Wardian case made it possible to transport living plants across oceans alive for the first time in history.

It launched the Victorian fern craze, the orchid obsession, the great age of botanical expeditions — and it gave millions of women the ability to grow living things inside their own walls, in sealed worlds they could tend and watch and carry.
