'Vienne'

In the last years of the nineteenth century, Freud, Jung, and Adler were all working in Vienna, within a few miles of each other, in a city whose coffeehouse culture made radical thinking the daily habit of anyone who showed up with a newspaper and ordered a melange. The interior life — the unconscious, the shadow, the complex, the archetype — was being mapped for the first time in Western scientific terms. What the mystery schools had encoded in symbol, Vienna was putting into language.

Gustav Klimt was painting in the same city. His golden women, his coiling botanical ornament, his Tree of Life — all of it emerging from the same Viennese crucible of the esoteric and the modern meeting. Vienna was where Europe's interior finally broke open into the light.
