'Violetta'

In Verdi's La Traviata, Violetta is a courtesan — a "fallen woman" by the standards of her society. She is also the most spiritually clear-eyed person in the opera. She loves Alfredo truly. She gives him up to protect his family's honor. She dies of tuberculosis while the people who judged her watch. The opera condemns no one explicitly. It simply shows you what happened and who was damaged by the rules and who was not.

Viola: the violet. The most unassuming flower. It grows in shade, low to the ground, rarely the tallest thing in the garden.
